Budgie - Same

One of the best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal debut albums in history. The Welsh Power Trio Budgie came roaring out of the gate swaggering with blood and thunder in '71. And at that time they had very little competition for their band of bludgeoning heaviness. Only The Flower Travelin Band, Sabbath themselves, and Sir Lord Baltimore were on Budgie's league for sheer heaviness. What set Budgie apart from the pack though was the thumping Bass and wonderfully unique Vocals of frontman Burke Shelly. And the fiery Guitars of Tony Bourge. And add to that the fact that Budgie are very unique in their lyrics and perspectives and you get a pretty unique masterpiece. Most of the songs here are amazing but the class of the album are the fantastic heavy jams Rape Of The Locks and The Author. Then there's the brutish Homicidal Suicidal. Five thuggish stars all day.

Budgie are ridiculous, and great. Songs are strange and have changes of tempo and atmosphere within their performances. Burke Shelley's voice is so off the wall it wins you over after a spin of two. The riffs just never stop chugging until they want the Budge want to add a little mellow to the proceedings-which they do at all the right times. Boogie metal a-go-go!

Obra debut de Budgie el cual nos muestra un sonido muy influenciado por Cream, Led Zeppelin y Black Sabbath ya que el álbum es una destacada muestra de potencia y "melodia". La base rítmica (bajo y batería) es sólida y el trabajo de Tony Bourge en la guitarra pasa por varios estilos de riffs logrando producir un sello característico en Budgie, así pues, el álbum presenta poderosos y extensos temas hard rock de tintes progresivos y cortas y sencillas baladas acústicas con hermosas melodías. En resumen un trabajo destacado, cargado de fuerza y relacionado con el progresivo, pero subestimadas en su tiempo –nada es perfecto– sin embargo esta obra encierra muchos elementos como: "musculosos" riffs, ritmos cortesía del gran trabajo guitarrero de Tony Bourge y la sección rítmica de Burke Shelley y Ray Phillips, tempos a lo Black Sabbath con interesantes transiciones rítmicas y letras que se mueven entre el romanticismo y la sexualidad interpretadas de manera excelsa por Shelley. Una obra que merece más de una oportunidad y que bien podría estar el altar de los clásicos de oro.

Regresar a este álbum fue bastante emotivo, es uno de esos álbumes que podría llamarlo "histórico" pero no tiene tanta chicha como para etiquetarlo dentro de los que me marcaron la vida, sin embargo descubrirlo fue toda una odisea. El álbum después de mucho tiempo llego a mis manos por cortesía de los viejos y confiables bucaneros y debo decir que fue un descubrimiento bastante agradable en verdad, aunque me tomo tiempo en digerirlo como Dios manda, pues debo confesar que en un principio no hice click con su performance, a pesar de tener muchas cualidades había algo en Budgie que me tiraba para atrás, quizás era su propuesta malévola que rozaba con lo progresivo o tal vez era por el tono vocal que me parecía chirriante, sin embargo ante tanta insistencia le agarre cariño, hoy en día es un álbum que disfruto mucho escucharlo de vez en cuando, su imperiosa manifestación proto-metal se acentúa mucho con el pasar de los años y por ende se disfruta mejor, sobre todo sus primeros trabajos pues tiene ese marcado sabor de de los 70’s. *Se forman en 1967 en Cardiff, una ciudad de Gales. Integrado por John Burke Shelley (bajo y voz), Raymond Phillips (Batería), Tony Bourge (guitarra) y Brian Goddard (guitarra). En un principio se hacían llamar Hills Contemporary Grass y luego cambian a Six Ton Budgie. En 1968 el proyecto Six Ton Budgie no encontraba una discográfica que patrocinara su trabajo, así que Brian Goddard decide salir, convirtiendo a la banda en un trío y siendo conocidos desde ahí simplemente como Budgie.
